In-Person: American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certification

The American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certification program is designed to provide healthcare professionals and other rescuers with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and respond to life-threatening emergencies. It focuses on high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults, children, and infants, as well as the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and effective team dynamics in a multi-rescuer situation.

Program Highlights:

Core Skills: Participants learn to perform one- and two-rescuer CPR, AED usage, airway management, and how to relieve choking.

High-Quality CPR Techniques: Emphasis on performing CPR that meets current AHA guidelines for compression rate, depth, recoil, and ventilation.

Team Dynamics: Training includes skills in team coordination, communication, and other aspects of working effectively in a multi-rescuer scenario.

Hands-On Practice: The program includes practical exercises and simulations, which help reinforce CPR and emergency response skills.

Assessment and Certification: Participants are assessed through both a skills test and a written exam. Successful completion of the course provides a certification valid for two years.

The AHA BLS Provider Certification is ideal for healthcare professionals, first responders, and anyone who might need to perform CPR in a medical or emergency setting.

Student Experience While Taking Our In-Person Class

The AHA BLS Provider Certification program emphasizes hands-on practice to ensure that participants develop confidence and proficiency in life-saving techniques. Here’s how the hands-on component is typically taught:

1. Use of Manikins for CPR Practice

Participants practice CPR on adult, child, and infant manikins to simulate real-life scenarios.

They learn the correct hand placement, compression depth, and rate to perform high-quality chest compressions.

Manikins provide feedback on depth and rate, which helps students adjust their technique to meet AHA standards.

2. AED Training

Each participant practices using an AED on a manikin. They learn to recognize when to use the AED, attach pads correctly, and follow the device’s prompts.

Hands-on AED practice helps participants become comfortable with the sequence of steps needed to deliver a shock if necessary.

3. Team-Based Scenarios

Participants work in small groups to simulate multi-rescuer scenarios, learning effective team dynamics, communication, and role assignment.

These scenarios mimic real-life situations where multiple rescuers are present, enabling participants to coordinate tasks and ensure smooth transitions in performing CPR.

4. Airway Management and Ventilation Practice

The course includes practice with bag-valve-masks (BVMs) and other ventilation devices to simulate providing rescue breaths.

Participants learn to maintain an open airway and provide effective ventilations, which is especially important for healthcare professionals.

5. Skill Evaluation Stations

Instructors set up skill stations where participants are evaluated on specific skills, such as CPR for adults, children, and infants, AED usage, and choking relief.

Feedback from instructors is provided in real-time, allowing participants to improve their technique and gain confidence in each skill.

6. Debriefing and Reflective Practice

After each scenario or skill practice session, participants and instructors debrief to discuss performance, correct errors, and reinforce key learning points.

This reflection helps students retain the knowledge and enhances their readiness to respond in real-life emergencies.

This hands-on practice is critical, as it allows participants to develop muscle memory for the life-saving techniques they’re learning, ensuring they’re ready to respond confidently and effectively in actual emergency situations.

AHA BLS Provider Certification Prerequisites

There are generally no formal prerequisites for enrolling in the AHA BLS Provider Certification course, but there are some recommended qualifications and background knowledge that can enhance a participant’s experience and success:

Healthcare or Emergency Background (Recommended but Not Required):

The course is tailored for healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, EMTs, and other first responders, but it’s also open to anyone interested in learning CPR skills at a professional level.

Basic Understanding of CPR (Optional):

While not required, having some prior knowledge or experience with CPR can be helpful. This could come from a general CPR course or community training.

Preparation for Skills and Exam (Required by Some Providers):

Some AHA training centers may provide or recommend pre-course preparation materials, like a BLS Provider Manual or online resources. Familiarizing yourself with these can help you succeed in the skills test and written exam.

Physical Ability (Required):

Participants should be physically capable of performing the physical components of CPR, including chest compressions and using an AED. The course involves practical, hands-on skill assessments that require physical participation.

If a participant does not have a healthcare background, the instructor may spend additional time reviewing basic concepts, so everyone gains the knowledge and skills needed for certification.

Employment Opportunities

The AHA BLS Provider Certification can significantly impact employment, especially for those in healthcare or emergency response fields, as it is often a mandatory credential for these roles. Here’s how it can affect employment:

1. Job Requirement in Healthcare and Emergency Professions

Many healthcare employers, such as hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities, require current BLS certification as a hiring prerequisite for roles like nurses, physicians, EMTs, paramedics, and other allied health positions.

Non-certified applicants might not qualify for these roles until they complete the certification, so having it beforehand makes candidates more attractive and ready for immediate employment.

2. Enhances Employability and Competitiveness

For those in roles where BLS is not strictly required, such as medical office staff or certain administrative positions in healthcare settings, BLS certification can still be a strong advantage. It shows a proactive approach to patient safety and readiness to handle emergencies.

The certification can make candidates stand out, especially in highly competitive fields like nursing and paramedicine, where employers value emergency preparedness.

3. Skill Validation for Non-Healthcare Roles

BLS certification is increasingly valued in non-healthcare jobs, such as fitness training, education, childcare, and corporate wellness programs, where employees might need to respond to medical emergencies.

Certified individuals are often preferred in these roles, as they bring added safety capabilities to the workplace.

4. Career Advancement and Retention

For those already employed in healthcare, BLS certification is typically required for job retention and advancement. Many employers require proof of up-to-date certification as part of ongoing employment.

Renewing BLS certification can also be essential for career growth, as advanced certifications (such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support, or ACLS) often require an active BLS certification as a prerequisite.

5. Increased Confidence and Leadership Potential

Holding a BLS certification may increase a person’s confidence in emergency situations, which is valuable in any workplace. This confidence can position certified employees as informal leaders in emergency response scenarios, making them more valuable to their teams and organizations.

In summary, obtaining an AHA BLS Provider Certification can boost job prospects, enhance employability, fulfill job requirements, and even support career advancement across a wide range of professions, making it a valuable certification in both healthcare and non-healthcare roles.

FAQs About Our In-Person: BLS Provider Class

Is it online? Is their an in-person test?

The class is completely in-person. There is no online component and everything is provided at the institution. Students are advised to bring a notebook, pen and/or pencils to the class.

Do I need to renew this certification? How often?

Yes, the AHA BLS Provider Certification requires renewal every two years to stay current. The American Heart Association mandates this to ensure that healthcare professionals and others maintain their proficiency in life-saving techniques and are up to date with the latest resuscitation science and guidelines.

Key Points on Renewal:

Two-Year Validity:

Once you earn your BLS certification, it is valid for two years from the date of completion. After that, it expires, and you’ll need to complete a renewal course to remain certified.

Renewal Course:

Many AHA training centers offer a BLS renewal or recertification course, which is typically shorter than the initial certification course.

The renewal course includes a review of key skills, updates on any changes in guidelines, and hands-on assessments to confirm proficiency.

Staying Updated with Changes:

CPR and emergency response guidelines are periodically updated based on new research, so renewing your certification ensures you’re practicing the most effective, up-to-date techniques.

Importance of Timely Renewal:

Some employers require proof of current BLS certification as part of employment, so keeping your certification up-to-date can help avoid any interruptions in meeting job requirements.

It’s recommended to check your certification card or certificate for the expiration date and plan to renew a few months before expiration.

How do the credit hours work?

Students who complete the full certification and who have an eligible AHA account will be able to accept CE’s through the AHA website.

FAQs About Our In-Person Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician Program

Do the In-Person courses require an in-person test?

Students will need to pass a Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician Certification Exam after completing the course to receive their certification which is taken In-Person. Students will be able to take all their final exams at home online. Each of the national exams must be taken at the school by appointment. Exams are administered Monday through Friday starting at 9am.

How does the internship/ externship work?

As part of the Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician Certification Program, students will be performing their clinicals at the school through Dearborn Diagnostics Laboratory, which is a CLIA waived lab. Students will be instructed on how to draw blood, perform ECG’s and start IV’s. Students will come to lab/school during assigned blood draw days with a volunteer (over the age of 18) to be supervised by our instructors in the technique of blood drawing. Students should plan to achieve anywhere from 15-30 blood draws. We do not have the students take full tubes of blood from their volunteers. For students who do not have any volunteers, we suggest that they use the buddy system with their fellow students. Our staff will also try to pair students up who do not have volunteers. Students will have hands on practice starting I.V.’s on simulated practice arms and learn to use the IVAC machine to calculate drip rate. Students will learn to use a real Defibrillation and see how it works. Don’t worry, we are not going to put it in shock mode. Students will also learn the basics of CPR. This does not mean that they will be certified in CPR, but students will be taught how to save lives with CPR as part of their course. Students can expect to come to class once a week for 4 hours for 8 weeks. This time does not include blood draws. Students will begin blood draws around week 4 or 5 and come to draw days which are separate from their school meeting times.
