Press Release:

Phlebotomy Career Training has announced on Wednesday that they have officially partnered with Castle Branch. Mr. N’gganou head of marketing and development stated: “This is a giant step forward in helping our online and in person students secure their sensitive documents all in one place.” Castle Branch is used by all major nursing schools and medical schools throughout the United States.

Benefits of Partnering with Castle Branch

The partnering of Phlebotomy Career Training and Castle Branch effectively puts the school on the map with other schools such as Michigan State University and Walden University to name a few. Nancy Kimmel, Director of Admissions stated: “We require all of our students who are planning on doing their clinical externships through us to provide the school an exhaustive list of documents. Some of these documents include their social security card, drivers’ licenses, health insurance cards and medical records such as drug screen results, TB skin tests and immunization titers. No one feels comfortable sending these important and private documents through the United States mail. We must also dedicate a special area for the students documents that is secure and locked, not to mention having one individual who must process them all. With Castle Branch on board, students are now able to upload all their documents to a secure repository for a minimal fee. The other great thing is that Castle Branch manages the students information and reaches out to them if they are missing any important documents.”

Accreditation

According to the Castle Branch website, the main purpose is to process background checks, drug screens and sensitive information which is required by colleges, universities, and nursing schools nationwide. They are accredited by the Professional Background Screening Association which is considered the, “Gold Standard” for background screening. Castle Branch is recognized as a consumer Reporting Agency.

Clinical Pipeline for Externships

According to Phlebotomy Career Training administrators, their affiliation with Castle Branch fills the gaps between clinical rotations and the instructors. They stated that their overall purpose is to help gain visibility into their students attending clinical rotations and uncover those students who will make great employees.

From the information that has been gathered, Castle Branch will help with centralized reporting of student’s attendance at their clinical sites, enable instructors to track students progress and verify that students have submitted all their necessary documents to begin their clinical rotations.

Helping Students is the Key to their success

Nancy Kimmel states: “Castle Branch is our externship pipeline. The task of managing students from across the United States is an almost impossible feat for the staff here at the school. Most hospitals have stated that before they will accept on of our students, they must be first registered in the Castle Branch system. This system allows students to also track their own progress. Clinical staff can make notes in their progress which is then forwarded to our online instructors. We want all of our students to know that clinicals is a necessary component of their studies and that they must take it very seriously.”

It appears that the partnership with Castle Branch is a step in the right direction for Phlebotomy Career Training.

Phlebotomy Career Training has been in operation since 2009 and serves both in persona and online students. The programs that Phlebotomy Career Training offers include Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, Dialysis Technician, Electrocardiogram Technician and many more. To find out more about the programs that they have to offer please visit: https://pctedu.fusedash.com/

How to Earn Contact Hours for PA School What is a PA? PAs (Physician Assistants) are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often […]

How to Earn Contact Hours for PA School

What is a PA?

PAs (Physician Assistants) are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. With thousands of hours of medical training, PAs are versatile and collaborative. PAs practice in every state and in every medical setting and specialty, improving healthcare access and quality.

What do PAs do?

Physical assistants’ specific duties depend on the setting in which they work, their level of experience, their specialty, and state laws. They obtain patient histories, perform physical examinations, diagnose illness and develop treatment strategies, order and interpret lab tests, counsel patients on preventative health, perform various medical procedures, assist in surgical operations, and in most states can write prescriptions.

Degree Requirements for PA School

A bachelor’s degree from one of the accredited colleges and universities is the first requirement to join PA school. You can fulfill this requirement by completing a Physician Assistant program. You do not have to wait to finish your undergraduate study to apply to join PA school. However, because work experience gives you better odds, you need to a few years to volunteer, shadow a doctor or a PA, and maybe do research to increase your odds. Besides the bachelor’s degree, a PA assistant has to complete a master’s program accredited by ARC-PA, an independent body that licenses PA programs. The master’s program should involve classroom work and hands-on training. After this, you need to earn your PA certification by taking a PANCE test. You need to take the PANCE test within six years after completing your PA program. Within the six years, you are given six attempts – if you fail to get certified in all six attempts, you have to retake the ARC-PA accredited PA program. You can only start practicing after the certification.

Contact Hours for PA School

Like the GPA and GRE, there are no standard experience requirements for PA school. It is, therefore, challenging to know how much experience you need (in terms of hours) and in what areas. However, this is for sure, you will not get into any PA school without healthcare experience. There are different categories of healthcare experience, such as:

Experience in Patient Care : This is the most recognized experience category when applying to join PA school. You need experience in developing patient treatment plans, performing procedures, and directing treatment for a patient. To earn the experience, you can work as a phlebotomist, C.N.A., paramedic, dental hygienist, or physical therapist among others. Accepted students earned an average of 3,020 hours in patient care experience in 2019, according to the PAEA report.

Healthcare Experience : You only need to work in a healthcare setting for at least 1000 hours, either paid or unpaid. Here, you need experience in cleaning patients, delivering food, administering medication, or taking vitals. Patient’s care hours count when you work hands-on with patients.

Shadowing: Here, you only need to observe a physician or physician assistant work. In 2019, accepted students shadowed PAs for an average of 143 hours.

Volunteer Work: The volunteer work you undertake in a health facility does not count. You need to volunteer outside the healthcare system Here, you can tutor students in less privileged societies, fundraise money for charity, engage in city cleanups and so much more. You need at least 500 hours working as a volunteer.

What Can a Medication Aide Do?

Written by Haya Eshtayeh BA

A medical facility needs several employees in order to run. You find Receptionists, Technicians, Physiologists, Doctors, Therapists, Nurses and many more working there; some help with administration and others with taking care of patients. However, there is one particular job that deals daily with patients and is responsible for administering their medications: it is the Medication Aide Technicians. Therefore, what does a Medication Aide do? Where do they work? What is their pay scale? What are their responsibilities and duties? Moreover, what does it take to be a Medication Aide?

What Does a Medication Aide Do?

A Certified Medication Aide is a certified nursing assistant (CNA) responsible for administering daily medication to patients in a medical facility. Also referred to as Medical Aide Technicians, their duties include monitoring patients, reporting changes, and collecting samples.

Where Does a CMA Work?

Medication aides work in long-term care facilities, hospitals, medical centers, assisted living care centers and correctional facilities.

What Is a CMA Pay Scale?

Medication Aides earn on average $28,203 a year, with entry-level employees earning $13,500 and those with more experience bringing home over $39,000 a year. Some aides will work a typical 9-to-5 work week, but most work evenings, overnight and weekends, as patients must take medication at all times of the day.

What Are CMA Responsibilities?

Many nursing homes and assisted living facilities employ certified medication aides to distribute medicines to patients and residents. Like other nursing disciplines, women make up the majority of medication aides, nearly 88 percent of all nursing aides, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Therefore, who works in this field needs to:

– Deliver routine daily medications, either prescription or non-prescription, to patients.

– Coordinate with different nurses to assist with patient care and medications.

– Follow written or verbal instructions on how to manage medications.

– Record medication dosages and times.

– Observe patients and document changes in their condition.

– Gather samples for analysis.

– Ensure equipment is routinely inspected and cleaned.

– Uphold all health and safety standards.

– Respond to patient emergency call signals, bells, or intercom systems to identify patient needs.

What Are CMA Duties?

A CMA is a qualified and self-motivated and extremely detail-oriented person. The need to possess in-depth knowledge of patient care procedures. Providing excellent patient care is a vital part of this job, that is why excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required and being attentive to patients’ conditions is a must too.

What Does It Take to Be a Medication Aide?

Medication Aide education programs require only a few month’s commitment and take place at community colleges, tech schools and medical centers. Typically, a medication aide training program takes three to six months to complete and includes both classroom and hands-on training. Before starting a training program, most providers require students to have a high school diploma or GED and be currently certified nursing assistants or hold a nursing degree. Some programs also ask that students have some experience in a long-term care facility before taking the course. Training courses cover medication prep and how to deal with side effects and drug safety. In addition, a certification is essential for a Medication Aide; earning a license or permit generally requires filling out an application, meeting the education qualifications and paying an application fee. Candidates must also take and pass an exam.

As a result, a Certified Medication Aide Job requires:

– High school diploma or relevant qualification.

– Must be a certified medication aide.

– A previous experience as a medication aide (not a usual requirement).

– Able to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

– Good understanding of medical and .

While it may seem like a simple task, dispensing medication to patients requires special training. Even mild drugs like aspirin can have devastating effects when given to the wrong patients, which requires someone with the know-how to safely administer medication. A Medication Aide job is tough; however, whoever works in this field is notably a learned and bright person.

Medical Assistant Duties in Rheumatology

High quality health care does not just happen. It requires the assistance of a person who can follow the directions of a doctor or a registered nurse while also making the patient feel comfortable and assured; especially at a department that deals with movement disorders. Rheumatology is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases. It is the study of rheumatism, arthritis, and other disorders of the joints, muscles, and ligaments. Notably, the ability to give the same level of attention and detail to each and every patient is a juggling act, yet this is what distinguishes the medical assistant role. Medical assistants work at outpatient clinics or for private practices; therefore, what are their responsibilities and duties? Also, what does it take to be a medical assistant?

    •The Medical Assistant Responsibilities:

A medical assistant has a core role at the healthcare facility they work at, they:

Check schedules and organize patient flow.

Accompany patients to the exam or procedure room.

Collect patient information/history; taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines, and relay instructions to patients and their families.

Send or receive patient medical records in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations.

Comply with the requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies and with all Health System policies and procedures.

Prepare, clean and sterilize instruments and maintain equipment; stock patient exam rooms while maintaining cleanliness and organization, and dispose contaminated items according to protocol.

Perform phlebotomy, electrocardiogram tests (EKG), hearing and vision screens and level one labs.

Assist physicians and perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure.

Start I.V.’s

Administer ordered medications and/or vaccines via oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or inhalant administration.

Schedule patients for diagnostic testing and follow up as appropriate to ensure completion of testing.

Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.

Document patient information into the medical record.

Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.

Answer calls and provide pertinent information including patient education as directed.

do other front office responsibilities as required.

perform Electrocardiograms

perfrom venipuncture/phlebotomy

  A Medical Assistant Duty:

A Medical Assistant should stay humble and raise their humanity, they need to know how to:

– Greet and prepare patients for the health care provider while maintaining a positive and caring attitude.

– Be attentive to the patient’s needs, coordinate care, administer care, and document appropriately.

– Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data by protecting the patient privacy rights while observing HIPAA regulations.

– Assist patients who need the help to walk, transfer, dress, collect specimens, prepare for tests and other tasks.

– Provide education for patients and their families in an understandable way, individually or in group format.

-Arthritis takes on many forms, such as osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis and psoriataic arthritis. Each of these forms are unique unto themselves, in that the signs and symptoms differ. They however are all very painful and eventually debilitate the patient almost completely.

It is not unusual for patient’s to cry from the pain and the disfigurement. A medical assistant cannot feign compassion, they must have it in the hearts. Compasson must be a part of who they are as a person. Patient’s know when someone shows false concern. Keep in mind that rheumatology covers the disease of the immune system and therefore patient’s disease process is not unlike a type of cancer. As a matter of fact, many patients are administered types of cancer drugs in the office, by the medical assistant.

These drugs must be given intravenously and the medical assistant must know how to perfrom an IV insertion as well as hang a bag of medication and calculate the drip rate. Sounds pretty tought right? Well it is! That is why the school which the medical assistant chooses to attend should have an IV class with certification. The truth is, many do not, because it is mostly a skill which is tasked to the registered nurse.

What does it take to be a medical assistant in Rheumatology?

For people who are interested in this field, prior medical assisting experience is preferred. The medical assistant needs to maintain composure even in very difficult situations, so they need to know patient handling techniques. Moreover, being a medical assistant means to be as much human as they can and to first handedly deal with patients. Assistants must show sincere interest in others and their concerns, have high customer service skills, and develop effective relationships with patients, hospital departments, and other external parties. Most importantly when working in Rheumatology is to remember that your patient’s are in immense pain.

In addition, working at the Rheumatology department requires its fellows to obtain knowledge of terminology that is used in diagnosis and classification of illnesses, injuries, and disabilities as well as knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology, generic and trade names and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding. Also, the job requires knowledge of hematology-blood collection technology, techniques, and procedures, too.

Nevertheless, knowledge and skills are not all that is required! Working as a medical assistant in the Rheumatology department requires lots of physical effort, too. Medical assistants endure constant standing and walking. They frequently use speech to share information through oral communication, and they use their hearing ability to distinguish body sounds, hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery and so. Also, they frequently lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing 0-50 lbs as well as they occasionally lift and move patients. Medical assistants might bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, sit, squat and do repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements, too.

Medical assistants have pride in their empathy with patients: they whiz at getting a patient ready for an exam or test; they value working in a humanity-filled environment, and they are good at accurately conducting tests, recording patient stats and handling test results. Being a medical assistant in Rheumatology department is not something easy to do; however, it is a job that gives twice as much as it takes. At Phlebotomy Career Training, we are committed to teaching the application of industry leading techniques to our Medical Assistants.

What is Medical Billing and Coding?

Medical billing and coding is a process of “translating” a doctor’s diagnoses to a numeric or alphanumeric code. For every injury, diagnosis, and medical procedure, there is a corresponding code. Medical billers take the information from the medical code and make a bill for the insurance company, called a claim, relating to a health care system. Many people interested in Medical billing and coding would prefer to take the certification online.
Who are targeted?
Medical billing and coding certificate should target a group of people who can handle the job perfectly and those who have helpful skills such as: organization skills, attention to details, strong ethics, communication skills, and analytical skills. When you visit your doctor, your medical insurance provider will receive a bill containing medical codes, including CPT, ICD-10 and possibly other codes.

For example, if an X-ray is performed or blood is taken, those services would also be represented by medical codes on your bill. There are thousands of medical codes – one for nearly every type of health care service, procedure and even for medical equipment. Medical coders work in every type of health care facility, including doctor’s offices, surgery centers, hospitals and health care systems. Some experienced coders have the ability to work at home through an employer or as a contract worker.

Coding requires extraordinary detail. The coder must carefully review the patient’s chart to learn the diagnosis and itemize every service provided. If a service is overlooked, the provider will not receive payment for it. If the coder chooses the wrong code, the provider may have to return any excess payment or face legal charges for overbilling.

Medical coders spend their days reviewing medical records to assign these codes and ensure that the health care providers they support are properly reimbursed for services. Physicians and hospitals depend on accurate coding to receive proper reimbursement, making the role of the coder a valued one.

Coding accurately is not easy. The coder must carefully read the doctor’s and nurse’s notes to precisely determine the services received by the patient. The coder must also understand private payer policies and government regulations for accurate coding and billing. By some estimates, inaccurate or incomplete coding costs the doctors thousands of dollars each year in lost payments. Without competent coders, providers run the risk of losing revenue.
What are the Main Job Duties?
Medical Billers and coders’ job includes many responsibilities and duties. They do their work remotely due to the fact that all work is done on computer and E-mails.
The medical biller and coder job duties:
1. Verify coverage and eligibility for medical services
2. Communicate with insurance providers and patients
3. Review patient bills and correct any missing or inaccurate information
4. Use a billing software to prepare and transmit claims
5. Collect unpaid claims and clear up discrepancies
6. Investigate and appeal claims that were denied
7. Complete data entry to update spreadsheets and reports
8. Work with patients to set up payment plans
9. Adapt to updates and changes in billing software.
How much could a Medical Biller and Coder Make per Hour?
The typical pay scale for a medical biller can fluctuate according to location, experience, and training. Pay scale suggests that the hourly pay can range anywhere from about $12 to $20, with an average of $15.75.

According to US News and World Report:

Medical records technicians might also be called coders, coding specialists or coding representatives. These professionals “abstract information from medical record documentation, assigning the appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes,” says Lisa Manesis, coding quality coordinator at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. “These codes are then used for a number of different purposes including, among others, reimbursement, planning, research, and by public health officials to track and monitor disease patterns.”

Have you wondered how medical personnel are being used during the world outbreak? First of all you may want to hold on to your seat, because what you are about […]

Have you wondered how medical personnel are being used during the world outbreak? First of all you may want to hold on to your seat, because what you are about to read is truly inspiring. This is a time when it’s a, “all hands on deck” scenario. Meaning, that everyone with medical experience is needed on the front line. The question posed to you, if you were in the field would be, can you start an IV, do you know how to suture, are you willing to assist with a surgical procedure? They are not looking for you to say, NO! Rather, the medical team is expecting you to say, Yes! Even if you have never done a particular skill, you are going to learn on the job quickly. Trust me, I know first hand. So you are interested in becoming a medical assistant? This is the best time if ever to go into the field. Why? Because of the experience that your going to receive.

Does the above scenario sound like a war zone analogy? Maybe because it is. Just walk into any ICU anywhere and you will see the nurses and doctors working frantically to keep people alive. Sounds like a war zone to me. But, in all honesty, the truth is that states have waived many restrictions on medical professionals who aren’t physicians to assist in helping those who need emergency care. So in all reality you may just learn how to start an IV on the job, perform wound irrigation, prep someone for surgery or assist in surgery.

Time is of the essence. We have so many medical providers who have shut down their office practice due to the risk of contracting Covid 19. Is this ethical? Is it against their Hippocratic Oath? You can be the one to decide. The point is that we are living in very strange times indeed and those who step out into the forefront of this mayhem and madness are the ones who will have saved lives.

No one can tell you when it’s the right time to enter the medical field or when it will be safe to go back to school. But you can decide if you want to be a part of history. Being a medical assistant is just that, you are an assistant to the physician. As an extension of the physician you will be asked to do perform skills under their instruction. Physician’s need you.
Where will you work? Currently, the most likely place that you will work is in the hospital. Medical assistants are now trained to help in triage. Here you will take the patient’s temperature, vital signs, blood pressure, pulse oxygenation and a brief history before they are escorted back into the emergency room.

You may also perform electrocardiograms, perform phlebotomy and deliver specimens to the lab. You may also take part in a Code Blue, where patient resuscitation is needed. You will be busy from the time you get to work until the time you go home, unless you are asked to work overtime. Twelve to sixteen hour shifts are not unusual right now. If you think that this is a good career choice, then you should do your research and pursue it further. With so many schools and universities currently closed, there are not that many options other than online. So take your time to decide if online education is for you. Make sure that you have a instructor who will work with you on a personal level and have frequent class sessions that are live. Make sure that you can also view the lectures if you cannot attend. Clinical experience is a must and many schools will require that the student find their own clinical site. So contact your family physician and other urgent cares close by. There is one thing that is certain in the medical field, no one refuses free help.

Be safe and stay well.

Notice to all our students and future students

Phlebotomy Career Training is taking the necessary steps to ensure everyone’s safety.

In light of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, and the fact that the seasonal influenza (flu) virus is also widespread, we are taking proactive steps to address a number of business concerns. First and foremost, we want to maintain a safe workplace and encourage and/or adopt practices protecting the health of our students, employees, customers, visitors or others. We also want to ensure the continuity of business operations during this pandemic.

We ask all students and employees to cooperate in taking steps to reduce the transmission of communicable diseases in the workplace. Employees are reminded of the following:

Stay home when you are sick.

Wash your hands frequently with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds.

Cover your mouth with tissues whenever you sneeze, and discard used tissues in the trash.

Avoid people who are sick with respiratory symptoms.

Clean frequently touched surfaces.

Phlebotomy Career Training is keeping class sizes small. Additionally, we are offering all students respirator N-95 masks should they choose to wear one. We are also providing alcohol-based hand sanitizers throughout the workplace and in common areas. We encourage all students to make use of the multiple handwashing sinks and wash their hands when they come to class. Cleaning sprays and wipes are also provided to clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces such as telephones and keyboards.

Employees are encouraged to use telephone and video conferencing instead of face-to-face meetings as much as possible during this outbreak. IT support services are available to employees who need assistance with this technology.

It is critical that students and employees do not come to the school while they are experiencing respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills or fatigue. Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that employees remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100 degrees F or 37.8 degrees C) or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. Many times, with the best of intentions, employees report to work even though they feel ill. We understand that our students and their families are concerned about the virus and we at Phlebotomy Career Training are standing vigilant to ensure the highest measures of safety for our staff and students. Let us work together to help everyone remain healthy.

Please keep up with the latest information regarding the Covid 19 virus.

Also please visit the CDC for more up to date information according to your state of residence.

CDC is working across the Department of Health and Human Services and across the U.S. government in the public health response to COVID-19. Much is unknown about how the virus that causes COVID-19 spreads. Current knowledge is largely based on what is known about similar coronaviruses.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in humans and many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people, such as with MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV. The virus that causes COVID-19 is spreading from person-to-person in China and some limited person-to-person transmission has been reported in countries outside China, including the United States. However, respiratory illnesses like seasonal influenza, are currently widespread in many US communities.
